Rubber Spearguns

Before you go out and buy your first rubber speargun, there are a couple of things you need to know. You don’t want to go out and spend a few hundred dollars on something that won’t suit your needs. The following information is a guide to help you learn about rubber spearguns and which one you should buy.

What is a Rubber Speargun?

Rubber spearguns use the energy from contracting rubber tubes to propel the spear through the water to shoot fish. The diver ‘loads’ the speargun by sliding the spear into a slot connected to the trigger mechanism and then pulling back the rubbers onto the spear ready to be fired.

Speargun Parts

The rubber speargun consists of two main parts. They are:

The Barrel

The speargun’s barrel is its main and largest component. The barrel has a groove cut into the top of it which acts as a guide for the spear to shoot out straight. There is a loop at the end of some barrels that the spear shoots through which holds the spear on the gun and also acts as a guide for the spear.

You can also attach a line reel to most spearguns which will allow you to play the larger fish. It’s very handy to have a line reel so if you’re thinking about hunting big fish you might want to consider it.

The Handle

To be able to fire the spear from your speargun you use the handle and trigger. The handle is attached to the butt of the barrel and houses the trigger mechanism along with the safety switch. Each manufacturer has their own style of handle. These days they are ergonomically designed and most good brands have decent trigger mechanisms in them.

To ensure a rubber speargun has enough power when you fire it you must have the right sized rubbers. The rubbers need to be small enough to give the gun power, yet big enough for you to load without straining yourself every time.

Rubber spearguns are usually the preferred type of speargun, over pneumatic because there are far less maintenance issues. If you take care of your rubber speargun, the only part you should have to replace will be the rubbers, and that is an inexpensive and easy task. It’s a good idea to always have a few spare rubbers with you as they seem to break at the most inconvenient times.

You can get a lot of power out of a speargun simply by increasing the number of rubbers you use or the size of the rubbers. When hunting big fish, a lot of spearos like to use 4 or 5 rubbers!

If you put tiny rubbers onto a large speargun it would be almost impossible to load so find the balance between power and loading difficulty for your rubber speargun.

Home Made Vs Bought

One way of getting a speargun is to make it. Making your own rubber speargun is a lot cheaper than buying one, but you must have a few wood-working skills to make a nice gun. If you decide to make your own speargun, buying the handle and only making the barrel yourself would be the easiest option.

The majority of the rubber spearguns I use are home-made and they work just as good as any of the top brand spearguns on the market.

If making a speargun isn’t for you than you will want to know which spearguns are good to buy. Most of the spearguns on the market will work fine for you and if you are a bit unsure about spending a few hundred dollars on the ‘top-of-the-range’ spearguns, just get a cheaper one.

Now you’re ready to go and get a rubber speargun. If you’re still unsure which speargun to pick, just ask the guys or girls at your local dive shop. They are usually familiar with the different makes and models.
